The main school of thought concerning Mardi Gras, is it started thousands of years ago, as a celebration of fertility. Eventually, the Catholic church became involved, in an effort, to stop parishioners from partaking in pagan festivals. The Church changed the name to Carnival and had the season coincide with the seasons of the Catholic calendar.
Mardi Gras, at one time, began on Twelfth Night, January Sixth, each year. Twelfth Night was the last of the twelve days of Christmas. However, now it is set to end forty-nine days before Easter Sunday.
Epiphany is the time, between Twelfth Night and Mardi Gras Day, when all the parades and balls are scheduled.
Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) is the last day of Epiphany.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Lenten season, which runs for forty days, until Easter Sunday.
In 1743, New Orleans, celebrated its first Mardi Gras. The authorities tried to stop the celebrations, but when they were unsuccessful, they decided to control them, instead.
Parades are public events, which anyone may attend, but the balls are private affairs for the Krewe members and their guests. Most balls are held after the parade and the this is where the Royalty is announced as they make their way into the party. Each parade has a King, queen, maids, lieutenants, laidies-in-waiting, and pages. The balls are highly formal affairs with black-tie tuxedos and ball gowns. Some balls are similar to masquerades, as they require attendees to where masks, headdresses, and costumes. Generally, each ball will share the theme of the Krewe, and revelers must include the theme in their outfits.
Mardi Gras Balls are steeped in tradition, and some are extravagant affairs. If you ever get an invitation, clear your calendar and get ready for fun!

Growing up on the West Bank of the river, I had always attended the parades. I love the revelry of the Mardi Gras season. I also love the colors and costumes.
Me too MIchelle…I lived in Kenner until I was six, but NOLA is always in my heart.

Great Mardi Gras article! thanks for mask and the food!
Glad you enjoyed!!!! YAY!
I would love to go to Marti Gras at some point. Must get over my anxiety attacks caused by crowds first though, or get some really good drugs from my doctor so that I won’t care, LOL.
I’m not good in large crowds either. I do the same! A daquari and I usually relax enough to handle it. I’m not a big drinker but especially in NOLA you can get overwhelmed….the parades in the suburbs and Baton Rouge are smaller. I suggest never going on Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras day. I did that one time and flipped because it was literally a sea of people moving together. I had to get out! LOL but there are smaller parades that are very nice.
I have been on your pages for awhile now. I enjoy talking to you and seeing your work. Thanks for the blog hop and i hope to read your book soon!
Thanks you very much Rhonda!!! I hope so too!
Went to Mardi Gras once when I was much much younger :-}. It was FANTASTIC!!! . The crowds were huge and the floats and parade were fabulous. Still have the bead I got from the floats. If you are young you can handle the crowds on Bourbon Street. I couldn’t do it today, but it was great fun back in the 70’s.
LOL I did it in my twenties…I wouldn’t do it now either!
SO much fun learning about mardi Gras. Thank you!!!
Love the pictures and the information on how Mardi Gras began.
